A Message From Richard Coffey, Art DirectorA Message From Richard Coffey, Artistic Director

Recalling the fervor surrounding our 2004 musical observance of Kristallnacht, we again return to Hartford’s Center Church to offer music of “remembrance and hope” that will both call to mind past pain and pleasure, but also offer a powerful message of joy and hope. The centerpiece, as in 2004, will be Donald McCullough’s poignant Holocaust Cantata featuring choral settings of Polish folk songs, selected in response to writings by concentration camp prisoners. This year we add excerpts from Ernest Bloch’s beloved Sacred Service and a contemporary setting of Psalm 23 by American composer Conrad Susa.

“Christmas with CONCORA” will be the first time the spectacular voices of the women of CONCORA bring the message of the holiday to us. Guest-conducted by Mark Singleton, one of our region’s most brilliant and engaging conductors, our women will offer the incomparable Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten and other works ranging from tender to dazzling. The acoustically and visually stunning chapel of St. Joseph College in West Hartford is the centrally located and convenient site for this memorable presentation.

We continue our wildly popular “Bach!” series in collaboration with The Hartford Symphony and in our “Bach home,” Hartford’s Immanuel Church. This year we offer the double-choir motet, “Komm, Jesu Komm” in an unusual spatial configuration, and then two magnificent cantatas, #21 and #182, both often requested by you, our Bach fans.

Our season closes with a return to the resplendent Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, where, in 1992, CONCORA first presented the monumental Vespers of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Many still remember the excitement of that standing-room-only occasion and already look forward to hearing this seventy-five minute work that deeply moves both soul and body of every listener.
